It's been a while since I wrote about Eddie Lancaster. I published Warlock at War in June 2017, I think. So that's 9 months. Wow, I hadn't actually realised how long it had been until right now. I'm a bit shocked by that, I thought it had been around the end of 2017. Well, that explains the trouble I've had getting back into his head.
I sat down recently to write a short story about what he's been doing since the end of the last book. I'll be starting work on book 5 soon and wanted to give something to Eddie's fans in the meantime. It seemed an impossible task at first. I couldn't remember what Eddie was like. I couldn't remember how his mind works, how he talks, what he sounds like. The first attempt at writing was scrapped. I deleted and gave up.
I got a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to get back in his head again. I'd spent so many months writing other characters who were so different from Eddie, and the styles of the books were so different from the Arcane Inc. series, that it was just too difficult remembering who Eddie was. Of course, I was exaggerating as I often do.
I looked through all the notes I've gathered from the 4 Eddie books so far. I refamiliarised myself with the stories and the characters. Then I pulled the books off my shelf and got reading. After that it was easy to get back into his head. it happened in literally minutes. Everything came back to me. Eddie's changed a bit since book 1, he's not as spiteful, not as much of an arse. He has friends now, he's learned to appreciate other people. He knows better than to voice every thought he has. He still runs into dangerous situations unprepared, but some things never change. Some lessons take a little longer to learn. Maybe he'll learn in book 5. Probably not, though.
So, I sat back down to write that story. Once again I gave up. It turned out the idea was shit. I can't remember what it was anymore, but it didn't work. I let myself ponder it for a few days and eventually a better idea came to me. When I sat down to write it the words flowed easily and now I have a finished story. It's called All Hail The King. I'll write more short stories about Eddie to bridge the gap until the next book comes out which will be soon.
